Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is Visual Search?
Visual search uses images, rather than keywords, to find other images and relevant information associated with them. Given an image query, the visual search software extracts visual features and searches through an index of images to find those that are most similar to the query. Superfish has developed a general purpose, robust and scalable visual search system.
Who is Superfish?
We are a visual search company that has developed the Superfish Visual Search Engine: the first and only technology to analyze an image algorithmically and deliver similar and identical images in real time without the need for text tags or any human intervention. We are technology enthusiasts, computer scientists, and mathematicians who have been working for several years on visual search technology. Our vision is that visual search will one day allow people to use any picture at any time from any place as a search query. Superfish has headquarters in Silicon Valley and R&D in Israel. We are backed by investors including venture fund Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ), DFJ Tamir Fishman, IVF, and Xenia.
What is the Superfish Visual Search Engine?
The Superfish Visual Search Engine takes an image as a search query and returns identical or similar results in real-time. This ability to deliver similar image results is an extremely complex mathematical problem (orders of magnitude more complex than delivering identical image results) that Superfish has solved through a proprietary patent-pending algorithmic process. Our technology extracts the "visual fingerprint" of the query image and compares that data to our index of images to find the most similar results. To see the Superfish Visual Search Engine in action, install WindowShopper, the product comparison browser add-on tool. Over two million product searches are currently being served each day by Superfish.
What images are searchable?
While the Superfish Visual Search Engine can handle any type of image, we are currently focused on retail products. Our current index includes over 150 million products from thousands of US, UK, and German merchants in every product category.
How do I get my products listed in your index?
If you are an online store selling products in the US, UK, Germany, France or Australia, your products need to be available in a feed as part of a comparison shopping engine (e.g. PriceGrabber, Shopzilla, , Shopping.com, etc.) or an affiliate network such as LinkShare or Commission Junction. If you are part of one of those networks, just select us as a publisher and have your product feed available to grab.
